How the right disinfectant can help you save time and money


<p>Ringworm is not a worm but a fungus that causes skin infections in both humans and animals. Highly contagious, especially in high kitten density environments, it is zoonotic and can easily be transmitted from animal to human and animal to animal.</p>

<p>Cleaning and disinfecting during a ringworm outbreak follows the following phases:</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Protect &amp; Prepare</strong></h3>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Protect</strong>: To prevent the spread of spores, wear protective clothing, including gloves and boots. Isolate your kittens in a plastic playpen that can easily be cleaned and disinfected.</li>



<li><strong>Prepare</strong>: Before you disinfect, you must clean by removing any visible soils, including litter, food, or any other debris.</li>
</ul>



<p>&nbsp;Commonly used in shelters, Rescue contains detergents, allowing it to clean and disinfect against ringworm in one step once visible soils are removed.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Apply</strong></h3>



<p>Apply Rescue by spraying, mopping, or wiping the surface. If you are using Rescue Concentrate, <a href="https://www.rescuedisinfectants.com/resources/what-is-the-correct-way-to-dilute-rescue-concentrate/">dilute the concentrate</a> at 1:16 (8 oz of Rescue Concentrate for every 1 gallon of water).</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Wait, then Wipe/ Wash</strong></h3>



<p>Wait for the <a href="https://www.rescuedisinfectants.com/resources/what-is-contact-time-and-why-is-it-important-2/">contact time</a> by allowing the surface to remain visibly wet for the required contact time. This ensures that your Rescue disinfectant is doing the job of killing ringworm.</p>

<li>Continue disinfecting pet contact surfaces at least once a week once pets are no longer contagious.&nbsp;</li>
</ul>

<li>Change clothes and boots after handling infected kittens.&nbsp;</li>
</ul>

<li>Use the same cleaning equipment and solution in sick areas then healthy areas. Dedicated equipment should be used for isolation areas to reduce the risk of cross-contamination.&nbsp;</li>

<li>Use misting sprayers, which can create excess aerosolization of the disinfectant. Instead, use a foaming nozzle, microfiber cloth, or opt for wipes.&nbsp;</li>
</ul>

Ringworm: How to Clean and Disinfect Effectively with Rescue


<p>News of H5N1 Highly Pathogenic Avian influenza (HPAI &#8211; a.k.a “bird flu”) has making headlines at greater frequency, in light of recent and ongoing outbreaks in poultry and dairy cattle. While the virus originated in birds, infections have been documented in other non-avian species, including cattle and sporadic infections in humans and domestic animals. Recent reports have raised concern about transmission of Avian Influenza to cats, via environmental exposure or contaminated raw food diets.</p>



<p>Given growing concerns about the circulation of Avian influenza, we have put together some essential guidelines to prevent the spread of viruses, applicable both to avian influenza as well as other respiratory pathogens that may be present.</p>



<h1 class="wp-block-heading">Key Infection Control Guidelines</h1>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">1. Establish an Isolation Protocol</h2>



<p>Animals showing signs of illness should be promptly isolated to prevent the spread of avian influenza or other infectious diseases. This should be done regardless of whether a positive test for H5N1 influenza has been confirmed.</p>

<li>Staff should use personal protective equipment (PPE), including gloves, gowns, and masks, when handling isolated animals.</li>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">2. Follow a Robust Cleaning and Disinfection Protocol</h2>



<p>Proper cleaning and disinfection are the cornerstones of infection control.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Steps for Effective Cleaning and Disinfection against Avian influenza:</h3>



<ol class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Pre-clean surfaces:</strong> Remove any visible organic material (e.g., dirt, feces, blood) from the surface prior to disinfecting.
<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><em><strong>Note: </strong>If using a disinfectant without detergency properties, surfaces should be pre-cleaned with soap or detergent prior to disinfecting. If using a one-step disinfectant cleaner, such as Rescue, this step can be skipped.</em></li>
</ul>
</li>



<li><strong>Apply disinfectant:</strong> &nbsp;Apply your disinfectant evenly over the surface.

<li><strong>Observe contact time:</strong> Allow the disinfectant to remain on the surface for the required contact time as indicated by the manufacturer. For Rescue® products:

<li><strong>Rinse (if necessary):</strong> Certain surfaces, such as food or water-contact surfaces or toys, should be rinsed with potable water after disinfection. Most surfaces can be allowed to air dry.</li>

Kitten Care: Top Tips for Healthy Kittens and Socialization


<h2 class="wp-block-heading">1)&nbsp;<strong>Myth: Neutral pH disinfectants are always safer</strong></h2>



<p><strong><em>False!</em></strong>&nbsp;A disinfectant’s pH level (a measure of acidity or alkalinity) is not the most reliable indicator of how safe it is. Cranberry sauce and pickles, with acidic pH values of 1-2 do not pose safety concerns, which is why so many of us enjoy them! On the flip side, neutral pH disinfectants such as those made with Quaternary Ammonium Compounds (Quats) have been linked to occupational asthma and the development of dermatitis among users<sup>1</sup>.</p>



<p>Instead of relying on pH, standardized tests for skin and eye irritancy and other potential hazards provide much more accurate measures of safety. Rescue Disinfectants, with a pH ranging from 2-2.5, have proven to be non-irritating to eyes and skin, and are not classified for any health hazards in-use, highlighting the inadequacy of pH as a standalone metric for disinfectant safety<a>&nbsp;(</a><a href="https://rescuedisinfectants.com/msds-sds/">SDS here</a>)</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">2)&nbsp;<strong>Myth: Disinfectants with colours/dyes and added fragrances are better</strong></h2>



<p><strong><em>False!</em></strong>&nbsp;Colors and fragrances in older disinfectants are often linked to safety concerns<sup>2</sup>, adverse health reactions, and a decrease in air quality<sup>3</sup>. In fact, animals are often much more sensitive to smells than we are, and many healthcare facilities now enforce fragrance-free environments due to health concerns.&nbsp; Also, added fragrances in cleaners and disinfectants often mask odor causing bacteria and soil, which makes it difficult for you to tell if you have truly killed and removed everything.</p>



<p>In contrast, Rescue Disinfectants are not only free of any added colors and fragrances, but they also have built-in deodorizing abilities. This is why Rescue is often a favorite of veterinary professionals and the only&nbsp;<a href="https://fearfreepets.com/disinfection/">Fear Free<em>®</em>&nbsp;disinfectant</a>, as it is free of artificial fragrances or harsh chemical odors that can cause stress and anxiety in a pet during a veterinary visit.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">3)<strong>&nbsp;Myth: All disinfectants must be rinsed after the contact time to be safe for animals</strong></h2>



<p><strong><em>False!</em></strong>&nbsp;Not all disinfectants need to be rinsed off surfaces after disinfection has occurred. The active ingredient in Rescue Disinfectants is hydrogen peroxide, which breaks down to water and oxygen once it dries on a surface. &nbsp;While some other disinfectant chemistries, such as quats, are known to leave<em><u>&nbsp;active residues&nbsp;</u></em>behind on surfaces which can lead to antimicrobial resistance overtime<sup>4</sup>&nbsp;and other concerns.&nbsp; The only ingredients left behind from Rescue™ is some slight harmless detergent residue (similar to dish soap).</p>



<p>As a best practice, we recommend allowing the disinfectant to air dry first before reintroducing animals to the area. This is to ensure pathogens of concern have been killed on the surface by achieving proper contact time. Alternatively, you can provide a rinse with water after the disinfectant has reached its contact time, which would ensure that there is no pooling of the disinfectant on the surface. If accidental contact of a wet surface and a patient was to occur,&nbsp;rest assured Rescue Disinfectants&nbsp;are&nbsp;non-skin irritating in-use (<a href="https://rescuedisinfectants.com/msds-sds/">SDS here</a>).&nbsp; The only time a rinse with water is required is when disinfecting food-contact surfaces (e.g., water dishes, food bowls, etc.).</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">4)&nbsp;<strong>Myth: Rescue Concentrate is not effective when diluted with hard water</strong></h2>



<p><strong><em>False!</em></strong>&nbsp;Rescue Concentrate is designed to work well when diluted in hard water, to ensure that the solution is effective across a range of regions with varying water hardness. Rescue has chelating agents built into its formulation, which protects the solution from being inactivated from minerals in the water supply. Furthermore, Rescue has been demonstrated to remain effective in the equivalent of 400 PPM hard water (<a href="https://www.mcgill.ca/oss/article/health-you-asked/you-asked-hard-water-dangerous-drink">water greater than 120 ppm</a>&nbsp;is considered “hard”), providing confidence that most facilities can dilute and use Rescue Concentrate without concern.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">5)&nbsp;<strong>Myth: Neutral pH products are always more compatible</strong></h2>



<p><strong><em>False!</em></strong>&nbsp;Similar to safety, the pH level of a disinfectant is not the only measure of its potential compatibility with surfaces and materials. Rescue Disinfectants have been tested extensively and found to be compatible with most commonly used materials (<a href="https://rescuedisinfectants.com/ahp-compatibility-chart/">overview here</a>). Overall, Rescue Disinfectants work well with hard, non-porous surfaces like stainless steel, laminate, porcelain, ceramics, plastics, acrylics, resins, and silicon rubber.</p>



<p>It’s important to note, certain materials may face compatibility issues with any type of cleaner or disinfectant utilized. For instance, treating porous surfaces like unsealed concrete might not achieve full disinfection because of the porous nature, and issues with compatibility could arise over time. That’s why we suggest only treating hard non-porous surfaces, or adding a sealant for concrete, to ensure compatibility and complete disinfection.</p>

Five Ways to Reduce FAS in the ER


<p>Proper disinfection is key to maintaining a clean, safe environment for animals, reducing disease transmission while also minimizing anxiety triggers like strong chemical smells. Following the correct protocols ensure that the environment is clean while minimizing stressful sensory experiences that will help reduce fear and anxiety for the animals in your care.</p>



<p>However, common mistakes, like mixing chemicals or using expired products, can undermine your efforts. Learn how to avoid these pitfalls to ensure that you create a clean and safe space for the animals you care for!</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">1) Not measuring accurately</h2>



<p>Always follow the instructions on the label when mixing and using a disinfectant. Make sure to measure accurately! People often use too little disinfectant, either because they measure it wrong or they want to save money by using less. But doing this can make the disinfectant too weak to be effective. To help mix it correctly, you could use a <a href="https://rescue-delta.vercel.app/products/dilution-equipment">pump </a>that makes it easy to get the right amount of product, or a <a href="https://rescue-delta.vercel.app/products/dilution-equipment">system </a>that mixes it for you automatically!</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>2</strong>) Not reaching the proper contact time</h2>



<p>In other words, the surface being cleaned isn’t staying wet with the disinfectant solution for the required time to be effective. Make sure that staff members are informed about&nbsp;<a href="https://rescuedisinfectants.com/contact-time/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">how long the product needs to remain</a>&nbsp;on the surface to work properly.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">3) Confusing sanitized with disinfection</h2>



<p>To claim something is sanitized, the product must have reduced the pathogen load by 99.9%. Disinfecting requires reducing the pathogen load by 99.9999%.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">4)&nbsp;<strong>Wiping the surface right&nbsp;</strong>away after spraying</h2>



<p>If you spray a surface and wipe it off right away, it won’t be effective. Remember, no disinfectant works instantly! Always check the product label to find out how long the disinfectant needs to stay on the surface and make sure staff are allowing that&nbsp;<a href="https://rescuedisinfectants.com/contact-time/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">contact time&nbsp;</a>to be reached before wiping the surface down, or allowing the surface to air-dry.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">5) Using expired disinfectants</h2>



<p>Besides knowing how long a disinfectant lasts when it’s concentrated, it’s also crucial to know how long it lasts after you dilute it. This ensures it remains effective. The life of diluted disinfectants can vary—some last only 24 hours, others for 7 days, and some even for 90 days. Always make sure to read the label or contact the manufacturer to find out how long your diluted disinfectant can be used effectively.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">6) Topping off diluted disinfectant bottles, rather than starting each time with a cleaned bottle and fresh batch.</h2>



<p>Mixing old disinfectant with new can make the mixture too weak or ineffective. When the spray bottle gets low: empty the bottle, give it a rinse, allow it to dry, and then refill with new diluted disinfectant!</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">7) Mixing cleaning chemicals</h2>



<p>Mixing different chemicals can be dangerous and might stop your disinfectant from working right. For instance, if you add something scented to your disinfectant just because it smells nice, there’s a chance the chemical mixture won’t be as potent as it needs to be. This will lead to the potential of pathogens not being killed on surfaces which increases the risk of pathogen transmission for the staff and the animals.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">8) Not giving or receiving product specific training to team members</h2>



<p>Not all disinfectants are created equal. Different disinfectants work in different ways with various dilution rates, contact times, and safety precautions. <p>When it comes to technology, most of us would agree that newer is better. After all, you wouldn’t want your state-of-the art facility to be full of technology from the 1920s, and it would be hard to imagine functioning without modern phones and computers and everything else we can no longer live without! However, a lot of people rely on outdated disinfectant technologies, such as bleach, which can pose threats to the safety of your patients and staff. Newer alternatives, such as Accelerated Hydrogen Peroxide® (AHP®), have emerged as a solution to some of the problems with these older disinfectant technologies. Let’s break down how AHP® works:</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Hydrogen peroxide – </strong>The active ingredient in AHP® is hydrogen peroxide, which acts as a powerful disinfectant. However, the hydrogen peroxide levels in AHP® are at least 6 times lower than regular hydrogen peroxide that you can buy at the pharmacy. The result of this is a non-toxic, non-irritating, gentle disinfectant that can confidently kill pathogens, while putting the safety of your patients and staff front and center. <li><strong>Surfactants –</strong> Many older disinfectants require pre-cleaning prior to use, and are easily inactivated by organic matter. <h2 class="wp-block-heading">Screening</h2>



<p>Screening of pets upon admission to your facility is important in preventing the entry of pathogens into your facility. This will allow you to track any health or vaccination changes, current or recent disease symptoms, or travel history that may indicate a higher risk of infection. Pets with known disease exposure may be excluded for two weeks, or as recommended by a veterinarian.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Isolation</h2>



<p>As a general precaution, unnecessary contact between pets or between pets and people should be avoided. Facilities should have a dedicated isolation area that can be used to separate animals with a suspected or confirmed infectious disease.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Cleaning/Disinfection</h2>



<p>When possible, equipment should be dedicated to a single animal. Surfaces and equipment that come into contact with multiple pets should be regularly cleaned and disinfected with Rescue.</p>



<p>In the case of a suspected outbreak, e.g., if a pet is exhibiting symptoms of a respiratory infection, it is recommended to disinfect using the 1:16 (8 oz./gallon) of Rescue Concentrate, or RTU/Wipes.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Work Clothing</h3>



<p>Dedicated clothing should be worn when in contact with pets, and laundered to prevent transmission of pathogens.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Hand Hygiene</h3>



<p>Ensure that staff and visitors are washing their hands with water and soap or hand sanitizer (if hands are not visibly soiled) between contact with each dog whenever possible, and before entering and after leaving animal areas. Have hand hygiene stations easily accessible throughout your facility.</p>
